According to IFS (Internal Family System) therapy, our mind is multidimensional: it is made up of various "Parts" that have their own emotions, abilities, feelings, thoughts and a specific role.
We distinguish between the Exiles and the Protectors.
The former carry the burden of negative emotions, experienced traumas or simply socially unaccepted behaviors, such as anger or vulnerability.
The latter have the goal of protecting the internal system, keeping the Exiles away, for example a perfectionist part can push you to perfection to distance you from the possibility of being rejected, as in the past.
